Greetings and other phrases in French
Travelling to France and knowing some words or phrases in French makes you a a special traveller because French are very jealous about their language.
Greetings
Good morning:
Bonjour: from the morning until 7 p.m.
Bonne journée: when someone goes to work.
Good afternoon:
Bonne après midi: it is said after 12 or normally after lunch.
Good evening:
Bonsoir: from 7 p.m.
Bonne soirée: it is said when someone goes to a party, to have a drink, to dine or to friends' house. It would be at a leisure time during the evening.
Bonne nuit: se dice únicamente al irse a dormir.
Goodbye
Salut: it is used to say hello or goodbye.
Asking how are you?
Comment allez-vous?: Formal style.
Comment vas-tu?: Informal style.
Comment ça va?: Informal style.
Ça va?: Informal style.
