Business English course | Effective presentations
For some people, making a presentation may be a natural task, whereas for others it may be a real challenge. Regardless of the language, the content and the purpose, the presentation is what we show our audience and a good presentation ensures a high percentage of success. Therefore, we should plan it clearly focusing on our aims.
We give some advice to achieve an effective presentation:
- First of all, it is advisable to outline a plan that drafts the contents and the way they are linked. Though it may seem a waste of time, in the end it will avoid setbacks and mistakes. It may also help to summarize the material and make it more concise.
- Before planning the presentation, you should also visualize the audience to prepare the speech.
- The aims should be very clear. In order to do so, we may use the SMART criteria, which means: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound.
- The presentation should be neither to long nor to short. The average attention span of an adult is 7 minutes.
- Your should use colours, fonts and images that do not overburden the presentation and do not distract the attention from the main aim. Animated phrases and sound effects are no longer used. It is better to choose simple image illustrating the point stated.
- An effective speech is supported by graphics, diagrams and photos. This serves as a supplement. You should avoid repeting all the text.
- Use suitable body language and keep eye contact with the audience.
